About the Ueno area

❶  Do you know Ueno?

Ueno (上野) is a district in Tokyo's Taitō Ward, best known as the home of Ueno Park.

Ueno is also home to some of Tokyo's finest cultural sites, including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, and the National Museum of Nature and Science, as well as a major public concert hall.

Many Buddhist temples are in the area, including the Bentendo temple dedicated to goddess Benzaiten, on an island in Shinobazu Pond.

The Kan'ei-ji, a major temple of the Tokugawa shōguns, stood in this area, and its pagoda is now within the grounds of the Ueno Zoo.

Nearby is the Ueno Tōshō-gū, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Near the Tokyo National Museum there is The International Library of Children's Literature. Just south of the station is the Ameya-yokochō, a street market district that evolved out of an open-air black market that sprung up after World War II.

Ueno area around Ueno Station is famous for the Ueno Onshi Park that hosts Japan's leading museums and art gallerries, as well as Ueno Zoo with lavable pandas, and the Ameya Yokocho.

The Shinobazu-no-ike Pond is a natural pond of about 2 kilometers in circumference, at its center you will find the Shinobazu-benten-do Buddhist prayer hall.

If you are looking for some restaurants, you should go over to Ueno-hirokoji.

You will find long-established stores serving traditional dishes such as tonkatsu, eel or oden and so on.

Just east is the Ueno motorcycle district, with English-speaking staff available in some stores.

Ueno is part of the historical Shitamachi (literally "low city") district of Tokyo, a working class area rather than where the aristocrats and rich merchants lived.

Today the immediate area, due to its close proximity to a major transportation hub, retains high land value but just a short walk away to the east or north reveals some of the less glitzy architecture of Tokyo.

Ueno Station is the nearest train station and is operated by JR East.

Ueno Park and Ueno Station are also home to a large percentage of Tokyo's homeless population.

Though nearly invisible in other parts of Tokyo, the homeless population in Ueno can be found sleeping or communing in large numbers around the "ike" (ponds) of this district.

❷　About Ueno Station

Ueno Station (上野駅, Ueno-eki) is a major railway station in Tokyo's Taitō ward.

It is the station used to reach the Ueno district and Ueno Park—which contains Tokyo National Museum,

The National Museum of Western Art, Ueno Zoo, Tokyo University of the Arts and other famous cultural facilities.

A major commuter hub, it is also the traditional terminus for long-distance trains from northern Japan, although with the extension of the Shinkansen lines to Tokyo Station this role has diminished in recent years.

A similar extension of conventional lines extended Takasaki Line, Utsunomiya Line and Joban Line services to Tokyo Station via the Ueno-Tokyo Line in March 2015, using existing little-used tracks and a new viaduct; the Ueno-Tokyo Line connects these lines with the Tokaido Main Line, allowing through services to Shinagawa, Yokohama, Odawara and Atami stations.

Ueno Station is close to Keisei-Ueno Station, the Tokyo terminus of the Keisei Main Line to Narita Airport Station.

As this station was the traditional point of arrival and departure for journeys to northern Japan, it became the inspiration for many poems and song lyrics, including a famous poem by Ishikawa Takuboku.

There is a memorial plate about this poem in the station.

Ueno Onshi park is Japan's first public park,and one of Tokyo's finest spots for cherry blossom viewing.

Ueno onshi Park was established in 1873.

It was within the precincts of Kan'ei-ji, a temple established by the third shogun of the Edo shogunate Tokugawa Iemitsu.

Many people visit the park in early April to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

Ueno Zoo, which is first national zoo in Japan, was established in 1882.

You shuold see the splendid architecture of Japan's first museum.It was established in 1872.

The Tokyo National Museum holds over 110000 items, including 87 National Treasures and 631 Important Cultural Properties.

Ameyoko is the kitchen of Shitary folmachi ordinak, and also a place to find fashion and accessories.

Ameyoko with 430 stores is situated along railway tracks between the JR Okachimachi Station and Ueno.

You will mainly find fresh foodstuffs on sale, and shoes,clothes, misecellaneous goods and so on.

You will find Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese and Southern Asian foods.
